Notre Dame & the islands
You can experience historical Paris on the islands in the Seine. Île de la Cité is the island around which the city was first established. You'll find the famous Notre-Dame here, as well as the Sainte-Chapelle cathedral, with its beautiful stained glass windows, and La Conciergerie, where Marie-Antoinette was held prisoner. The river banks are great for a stroll. Stop at the Square du Vert-Galant or Place Dauphine for a picnic, or do as the French do and play a game of pétanque. Across the bridge lies Île Saint-Louis. This smaller island is known for its scenic shopping street, and for Berthillon, which sells the best ice cream in Paris.
