Eilanden & Noord
What are you going to do?
This walk takes you through what was once a lively port. On the eastern islands you'll pass architectural highlights and interesting bridges. Noord has a raw industrial edge and countless culinary and art initiatives. Today this is Amsterdam's trendiest neighborhood. Biking this route is ideal—that way, you can take in a larger area of Noord.
The walk starts in the center of Amsterdam and passes NEMO, one of the best museums for children. Het Scheepvaartmuseum (The National Maritime Museum) is also highly recommended—since its renovation, it's even more impressive. The museum highlights the rich history of the Dutch East India Company (VOC).
Nearby Czaar Peterstraat has been spruced up, and in recent years has become increasingly popular as a hipster street. Amsterdam Roest, a creative oasis on the site where the Dutch East India Company ships were once built, is the perfect place for a pit stop.
Continue towards the Oostelijk Havengebied for extraordinary architecture, then cross the water to reach trendy Noord. Here you will find the IJ-hallen, which houses Europe's largest indoor flea market, the futuristic EYE film museum, and industrial cafés, restaurants, and vintage furniture shops. Raw, industrial Noord is Amsterdam's Brooklyn and is increasingly being listed as one of the world's hippest neighborhoods.
Exploring everything this walk has to offer will easily take an entire day. If you love vintage furniture, then Noord is perfect for going on a treasure hunt. Check to see when the next flea market at the IJ-hallen is scheduled. They are generally held once a month.
