The Plaka is the district for souvenir hunters. Its many beautiful spots make it a picture-taking paradise.
If you are looking for the authentic heart of Athens, Plaka is your district. This spot below the Acropolis is Athens' ancient neighbourhood and has been inhabited for thousands of years. Not surprisingly, you'll find remains from different periods here: from the temples on the Acropolis to Byzantine churches and remnants from the Turkish period. The winding car-free streets and alleys of the Plaka are full of shops (from clothes to souvenirs), restaurants and cosy terraces. If you head a little further towards the Acropolis, you will enter the authentic part of the Plaka, where the locals themselves frequent.
