Let yourself be swept away by the creative spirit that blows through these multicultural, historic neighbourhoods and defines post-industrial Bilbao.
This is the neighbourhood for you if you love a vibrant urban atmosphere full of street art and unique shops and cafés. Bilbao la Vieja, together with Casco Viejo, is Bilbao’s oldest neighbourhood. Thanks to iron ore mining, it enjoyed great economic prosperity until the mid-20th century; decline followed. Ten years ago, a major regeneration project was launched, involving the restoration of (industrial) buildings and an influx of creative types. You’ll now find studios, charming shops, hipsters and plenty of cafés, restaurants and street food. The neighbouring San Francisco, once a monastery, is now a melting pot of cultures. This is where you’ll find most of the street art.
