This is the neighbourhood for you if you love a lively atmosphere with street art and quirky shops and cafés lining the streets. Bilbao La Vieja, together with Casco Viejo, is the oldest neighbourhood in Bilbao. Thanks to iron ore mining, the area enjoyed great economic prosperity until the mid-20th century; this was followed by a period of decline. From 2010 onwards, a major regeneration programme was launched, involving the restoration of (industrial) buildings and an influx of creative types. You’ll now find studios, lovely shops, hipsters and plenty of cafés, restaurants and street food. The neighbouring San Francisco, once a monastery, is now a melting pot of cultures. This is where you’ll find the most street art.
