This little town just outside Budapest is fun to visit if you want to see where artists found their inspiration.
Some 20 kilometres north of Budapest is the hilly town of Szentendre on the Danube. Its cobbled streets, numerous churches, narrow alleys and rich architecture show what a prosperous place it was. Thousands of Serbian refugees settled here in the 18th century, but most Serbs have since left. When the town began to decline, many artists moved here for the quiet rural life. Nowadays, the Danube and the numerous boat traffic in the summer months attract numerous tourists to Szentendre. The small town's rustic character and artists have remained.
