In this alternative district in the north of the city, you will find maritime history and eat and drink among the locals.
Head to Leith if you like a more raucous up-and-coming district. Formerly an independent port town, Leith is now part of Edinburgh, but its maritime history and individuality remain to be seen. Calton Hill appears on many postcards and is a short climb for great views over the city. Busy Leith Walk has a lot of nice galleries and shops like bookshop Typewronger. Around The Shore you'll find hip bars and restaurants full of locals, e.g. Toast and Roseleaf. The highlight for many is a visit to Queen Elizabeth's old yacht, the Royal Yacht Brittannia.
