In this alternative neighbourhood in the north of the city, you’ll find maritime history and can enjoy a bite to eat and a drink amongst the locals.
Head to Leith if you fancy a slightly edgier, up-and-coming neighbourhood. Leith used to be an independent port town and is now part of Edinburgh, but its maritime history and distinct character are still very much in evidence. Calton Hill features on many postcards and is a short climb offering a fantastic view of the city. The bustling Leith Walk has plenty of lovely galleries and shops, such as the bookshop Typewronger. Around The Shore you’ll find trendy bars and restaurants full of locals, such as Toast and Roseleaf. The highlight for many is a visit to Queen Elizabeth’s former yacht, the Royal Yacht Britannia.
