In this alternative neighbourhood in the north of the city, you’ll find maritime history and can enjoy a bite to eat and a drink amongst the locals.
Head to Leith if you fancy a slightly rougher up-and-coming neighbourhood. Leith used to be an independent port town and is now part of Edinburgh, but its maritime history and distinct character are still evident. Calton Hill features on many postcards and is a short climb offering a fantastic view over the city. The bustling Leith Walk has plenty of lovely galleries and shops, such as the bookshop Typewronger. Around The Shore, you’ll find trendy bars and restaurants packed with locals, such as Toast and Roseleaf. The highlight for many is a visit to Queen Elizabeth’s former yacht, the Royal Yacht Britannia.
