There’s always something going on in Altona! If you like fish and harbours, you’ve come to the right place. Be sure to visit the Elbe beach too.
When you think of a lively, bustling city neighbourhood right by the water, you’re thinking of Altona. The district lies on the River Elbe, where you’ll also find most of its highlights. The Altona Fish Market at the Fischauktionshalle (fish auction hall) on Sunday mornings is one of Hamburg’s best-known and most striking attractions. Further along the waterfront, you’ll come across old sailors’ pubs and excellent (seafood) restaurants. There are plenty of spots in this neighbourhood from which to look out over the ever-bustling harbour, for example from Dockland, a distinctive building shaped like a ship, or from the park by the Altonaer Balkon.
