Explore the less touristy side of Hamburg, admire stately villas and experience the mix of upmarket and student-friendly spots.
These neighbourhoods are just outside the city centre and are less well known to tourists, but certainly no less charming. They are the more affluent neighbourhoods, where you’ll find yourself surrounded by elegant 19th-century buildings. The Außenalster is never far away either. Eppendorf and Harvestehude are perfect for a spot of shopping along the Lehmweg and the Eppendorfer Landstraße. You can still see that Rotherbaum used to be Hamburg’s Jewish quarter from the Jewish theatre, the synagogue and a few cafés. As well as Hamburg’s wealthy residents, you’ll also come across plenty of students; the university is just round the corner. In the trendy Winterhude, on the other side of the Alster, it’s all about seeing and being seen around the Mühlkamp.
