A great fun neighbourhood to stroll through. Ideal if you want to experience Liège not as a tourist but as a real Liègeian.
Folk neighbourhood Outremeuse, on an island in the Meuse, is known for its traditions and folklore. The legend surrounding Tchantchès, a puppet and the symbol of Liege, was born here. You will find many references to the folk hero in the streets around Place de l'Yser. Outremeuse is also the neighbourhood where creative minds like the composer Grétry and the author Simenon grew up and where a lot of art nouveau can still be seen. Famous are the annual festivities around 15 August. Parades and Liège exuberance are the main ingredients of this popular festival. Every Friday you can visit the Saint-Pholien bric-a-brac market at Place Jehan-le-Bel.
