A great fun neighbourhood to stroll through. Ideal if you want to experience Liège not as a tourist, but as a real Liègeian.
Folk neighbourhood Outremeuse, on an island in the Meuse, is known for its traditions and folklore. The legend surrounding Tchantchès, a puppet and the symbol of Liège, was born here. You will find many references to the folk hero in the streets around Place de l'Yser. Outremeuse is the neighbourhood where creative minds like composer Grétry and author Simenon grew up. You still see a lot of art nouveau there, too. Famous are the annual festivities around 15 August. Parades and Liège exuberance are the main ingredients of this popular festival. Every Friday you can visit the Saint-Pholien bric-a-brac market at Place Jehan-le-Bel.
