These are the ideal neighbourhoods if you want to experience the daily life of the people of Madrid. Chamberí and Tetuán are situated north of the city centre and offer a mix of modern high-rise buildings and charming residential streets. In Tetuán, the wide commercial thoroughfare, the Paseo de la Castellana, dominates the streetscape, with spectacular office blocks and the monumental Nuevos Ministerios. Chamberí has a much more laid-back feel, with local shops, cosy squares and plenty of life on the streets. On Calle de Ponzano and around Plaza de Olavide, you’ll find plenty of terraces and restaurants.
