The villages of Pompeii and Herculaneum form part of the Naples metropolitan area and are well worth a visit when in the city. In the centre of Pompeii stands an impressive cathedral that attracts many pilgrims. Otherwise, it is mainly geared towards tourists visiting the Scavi di Pompei. Ercolano lies on ‘the Golden Mile’, a stretch featuring 122 18th-century villas built by the Bourbon aristocracy. Every morning there is a famous vintage market here, but you’ll mainly come for the Scavi di Ercolano. These are better preserved than those of Pompeii. There is also the Museo Archeologico Virtuale, a museum that presents the daily life of the Romans and the devastating volcanic eruption in 3D.
