The place to go back in time: visit the excavations of Pompeii and Ercolano under the watchful eye of Mount Vesuvius.
The villages of Pompeii and Ercolano are part and parcel of the metropolis of Naples. The centre of Pompeii is home to an impressive cathedral that attracts many pilgrims. Otherwise, it mainly caters to tourists visiting the Scavi di Pompei. Ercolano lies on 'the golden mile'; 122 18th-century villas built by Bourbon aristocrats. There is a famous vintage market here every morning, but you mainly come for the Scavi di Ercolano. These are better preserved than those of Pompeii. There is also the Museo Archeologico Virtuale, a museum showing the daily life of the Romans as well as the devastating volcanic eruption in 3D.
