The residential area of Hengstdal lies at the foot of the wooded hills to the south-east of Nijmegen. The northern side of the neighbourhood has traditionally been called the 'Red Village'. That name is based on the political preference of most residents as well as the colour of the roof tiles of the houses. In the 1990s, the working-class neighbourhood was largely replaced by new buildings, while retaining the red roof tiles as much as possible.
