If you come for conviviality and tasting delicious Port, this is your district. On the south bank of the Douro you will find Vilanova de Gaia; popularly called Gaia for short. The best part is the view of Porto. Indeed, from Jardim do Morro you have a puking view of the city. Here is the quay where the wine merchants built their warehouses and cellars. The bishop at the time charged high tolls for trade from Porto, and in Gaia it was avoidable. In fact, most port was exported straight from the Douro Valley via Gaia to other countries - and never made it to Porto at all! Taste deliciously of ruby, tawny and vintage here.
