Have a leisurely browse in the boutiques and shops, catching occasional glimpses of the mountains and stopping off to sample a delicious pintxo!
'Centro' is the part of the city that expanded from the late 19th century onwards, with the Buen Pastor Cathedral (1899) as its central landmark. It is teeming with shops, bars and restaurants, many of them in pedestrianised streets. The Mercado San Martín is the neighbourhood’s main market, hosting ‘gastropote’ on Thursday evenings – a combination of live music and pintxos amongst the food stalls. Along the River Urumea stand the Hotel Maria Cristina and the Teatro Victoria Eugenia. Both date from the Belle Époque of the early 20th century and, like the cathedral, are built from the sand-coloured stone that makes the city centre such a delight to stroll through.
