If you’re looking for peace and a change of scene in the ever-bustling city of Seville, then La Cartuja is the place to be. On the west bank of the River Guadalquivir lies Isla de la Cartuja, an ‘island’ where, until the late 1980s, you would have found nothing but meadows and a small monastery. Now it is characterised by the large pavilions built here for the 1992 World Expo. Expo ’92 was organised to commemorate the ‘discovery’ of the Americas and was entirely dedicated to water. The location is therefore not surprising. Along the riverbanks, you can take a moment to relax in one of the parks.
