For the bustling, historic heart of Stockholm, head to Gamla Stan. Every day, crowds of people stroll through the narrow streets and alleyways. The main street, Västerlånggatan, is particularly teeming with people in the summer. The more original or specialist shops, selling items such as handicrafts or raincoats, are mainly to be found in the alleyways off the main street, such as Österlänggatan and Köpmangatan. In and around Stora Nygatan and Lilla Nygatan, more and more new bars and gastropubs are popping up, ensuring that even the Stockholmians themselves are finding their way back to Gamla Stan.
