If you are looking for urban cosiness, Mariahilf is the place to be. It is a district where people go for shopping and for a night out. In the long, always busy Mariahilfer Straße, you will find many shops from big chains and the occasional bar. For a more alternative, artistic atmosphere, turn into a side street. Heading down Gumpendorfer Straße are streets with many cafés, good restaurants and new shops where young designers and architects have set up shop. The World War II anti-aircraft tower now houses monkeys and turtles (Haus des Meeres) and the outside is climbed by sports enthusiasts.
