This part of Kreuzberg is right next to the former Tempelhof airport. Because of this, it enjoyed good antiaircraft protection during World War II, and was spared from being bombed like much of the city. Bergmannkiez, near Bergmannstraße, and especially Chamissoplatz, offer a unique sense of what pre-war Berlin looked like. This is a wonderful neighborhood to walk through, with plenty of sidewalk cafés, benches, and squares to stop and rest. Don't skip walking up the Kreuzberg hill in Viktoriapark. This is the highest natural vantage point of Berlin.
