The vibrant Jordaan and the Negen Straatjes are the perfect neighbourhoods if you want to experience the authentic Amsterdam. This old working-class neighbourhood underwent a major regeneration in the 1970s and was transformed into an upmarket, much-loved residential area. Yet the Jordaan is still regarded as Amsterdam’s cosiest neighbourhood. You can still get a real feel for the good old days in the many traditional pubs and lovely restaurants, and for an evening of sentimental songs, you still head to Café Nol on Westerstraat. The Negen Straatjes is the place to be for shopping enthusiasts. Here you’ll find a huge selection of unique boutiques, delicatessens and gift shops.
