Belém is a quiet neighbourhood steeped in culture. It was from here that the Portuguese explorers set off on their voyages across the seas. The many museums and monuments from the 16th century still serve as a reminder of this. As well as historic buildings and botanical gardens, you’ll also find the famous pastéis de Belém here: puff pastry tarts filled with cream, cinnamon and sugar. The promenade along the river is lovely for a stroll; after taking in all the sights, be sure to sit down by the water’s edge, where the sailing boats glide past you.
