The highlight is the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. The mosaics of Santa Prassede are also well worth a visit, as is the Casa dell’Architettura, an exhibition space dedicated to architecture. The Nuovo Mercato Esquilino market is situated just behind Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, the multicultural heart of the neighbourhood. Fassi’s IJspaleis is a household name here. Do try the sampietrini, the typical Roman cobblestones recreated in chocolate.
