For Stockholm’s more urban and alternative side, Södermalm is the place to go. ‘Söder’ is Stockholm’s largest island. Along its entire northern edge, the high cliffs offer breathtaking views over the city. Södermalm used to be a farming island. As industrialisation took hold, it gradually became a working-class island. Like many old working-class neighbourhoods, Södermalm also developed into a popular area in the 1980s and 1990s. Students, artists, musicians, hipsters and designers love living here and spending time here. The locals of Söder particularly enjoy visiting the (vintage) shops and cafés in SoFo and the area around Mariatorget.
