Söder is the island for hipsters, vintage lovers and creative types. There is a lovely laidback atmosphere here.
For the more urban and alternative side of Stockholm, Södermalm is the place to be. 'Söder' is Stockholm's largest island. All along its northern side, you have breathtaking views of the city from the high cliffs. Södermalm used to be an island of farmers. When industrialisation emerged, it slowly became a real workers' island. Like many old working-class neighbourhoods, Södermalm grew into a popular district in the 1980s and 1990s. Students, artists, musicians, hipsters and designers like to live and come here. The (vintage) shops and cafés of SoFo and the area around Mariatorget are especially popular with Söder locals.
