Want to get to know the other Venice? Then come to Cannaregio and discover the romantic canals behind the busy Strada Nuova.
For a unique blend of urban and picturesque, this is the place to be. Cannaregio is Venice's second largest district after Castello. Most tourists often get no further than the Strada Nuova, the busy shopping street between the train station and the Rialto Bridge. However, you'll also find the Ghetto, the oldest Jewish neighbourhood in the world. To the north lies a neighbourhood with the city's most picturesque canals. On and behind the Fondamenta della Misericordia are many nice restaurants, ideal for balmy summer evenings. At the back of the neighbourhood, you hardly encounter any people. Here stands the pretty Madonna dell'Orto church, with its tomb and paintings by Tintoretto.
