Nice neighbourhoods for those who love shopping, impressive squares and cosy terraces.
Baixa literally means 'low' and this neighbourhood is the most central of all Lisbon's districts. After the devastating 1755 earthquake, the district was completely in ashes and rubble. The district is now known for its beautiful squares and clear street plan. This is immediately noticeable when you walk from Praça do Comércio into the straight shopping streets towards Rossio square. Especially during the day, this is a lively neighbourhood. A little higher up is the Chiado district. A fire in 1988 partly destroyed this area, but its facades have been restored. Shoppers, beware: you'll find lots of nice shops.
