Great neighbourhoods for those who love shopping, impressive squares and cosy outdoor cafés.

Baixa literally means ‘low’ and this district is the most central of all the districts in Lisbon. After the devastating earthquake of 1755, the district lay completely in ruins. The district is now known for its beautiful squares and well-organised street layout. This is immediately apparent when you walk from Praça do Comércio along the straight shopping streets towards Rossio Square. It’s a particularly lively neighbourhood during the day. A little further up is the Chiado district. A fire in 1988 partially destroyed this neighbourhood, but the façades have been restored to their former glory. Shoppers, take note: you’ll find plenty of lovely shops there.
