Does the cosy heart of a city have your preference? Then this is an ideal neighbourhood for you. Here you can stroll along beautiful squares and past old trams, and find cosy cafés and good food. Baixa literally means 'low'. This district is known for its beautiful squares and museums. After a devastating earthquake in 1755, the district was rebuilt. This is noticeable when you walk from Praça de Comércio into the straight shopping streets. Especially during the day, this is a lively area. A little higher up is the Chiado district. A fire in 1988 partly destroyed this district, but its facades have been restored. Shoppers take note: you'll find lots of nice shops here.
