The Centro Storico is a nice mix of cosy squares, chaotic traffic, atmospheric streets and grand monuments.
For the heart of the city, this is the place to be. The historic centre is bursting with monuments. The ancient Pantheon is one of the city's most impressive. Despite being over 1900 years old, it still looks heart-stoppingly good. Further on is Piazza Navona, a square built on an ancient Roman athletics stadium. The streets and squares surrounding these attractions are full of terraces. The market square Campo dei Fiori is particularly lively. A special place in the city centre is the ghetto. Despite its black past - for centuries the Pope kept innocent Jews isolated there - it is now one of the city's most atmospheric neighbourhoods.
