Lisbon should be high on your wish list if you are looking for a versatile city break. This is thanks to the diversity of its neighbourhoods – from authentic to hip and modern – and its cultural attractions and many parks. But also because Lisbon is a perfect city for shopping and you can catch your breath on one of the surrounding beaches, for example in the seaside resort of Cascais, an old fishing village. Of course, Portuguese food and drink are also a major attraction; be sure to try a portion of grilled sardines – but only from May to August, because that's when they're really fresh.
